Same @almodozo as on Twitter, just without the Országház. Worked at OSF and CEU, but that's a long while ago. Studied East-European History, but that's even longer ago. Now, somehow, I ended up in Extremadura.

The pain in question, it probably bears underscoring, being suffered by poor and vulnerable people who have to do without food stamps etc, not by the Democratic leadership.

It's a Senate, not a fiefdom. If you've lived through the past decade and came away with the sense that, sure, of course the Senate leader can impose a uniform vote on the whole caucus at all times, I don't know what to tell you.

Was it working, though?
(I don't think the eight should have caved, regardless. But I didn't see any evidence it was working so far either.)

I appreciate your work and I hope this isn't too trivial or sentimental a note, but as I get older it's so weird to see events which I remember so viscerally turn up as history explainer threads

Now I admit to a certain sentimental fondness for Budapest's dwindling number of foghíjtelkek, but did the cabbie drop these guys off on Gubacsi ut or something? What the fuck

Hungary has so many great towns, charming villages, and beautiful nature, a post like that is offensive even when you disdain Orban's rule too.
(Even in terms of poverty, which is an actual problem of course, it's not the 90s anymore; Western Hungary is now doing better than where I live in Spain.)

Just inviting everyone to come peddle cliches about East European hellholes last seen in EuroTrip, the Movie — in the name of opposing the far right, if course

Interesting that she keeps running with the "many, not the few" line, with all its corbynite overtones. I guess she really decided that invoking that echo has a strategic upside. I can see how it worked in the deputy leadership campaign; just kinda didn't expect she'd continue with it

More of the story (talking internationally) should always have been "GenZ women are really super duper leftwing," rather than "GenZ men are now kind of right wing, or at least not as left wing as you'd have thought"

Though Blikk is a tabloid and often unserious, "it has also published many pieces on alleged corruption". It's by far the most read daily newspaper, “its online site has become the fourth most read online site in Hungary," and its downmarket readership is especially important to Fidesz.
