Spunky to my Friends

Here for people who are politically like minded i.e. The Democrats as presently constituted will not save us; any and all animal photos, especially those featuring opossums ; gardening tips, old friends from Twitter, and anyone with a sense of humor.
New Haven Connecticut today, crowd is triple, maybe quadruple the size of previous demonstrations

While I was trying to clean out some of my files, I came across this Ferlinghetti poem. It was written in 2007, when people like me thought that George W Bush was the worst thing that could happen to the country. But it's even more apt now than it was when it was written.

Two new arrivals in our household. A wonderful addition in a time when every happy moment counts double because the world is so awful. Photo epitomizes their personalities. He embraces the world without fear; she is always wondering if there is a cabinet nearby to hide in if danger lurks.

Google is telling me this is a cast off Cicada skin. I have never ever seen one of these in Connecticut. That's all I need a Cicada plague. Are they showing up anywhere else that is unusual?

The need to assert one's individuality through not wearing a mask is pathetic.Your comment reminds me of Whitman's,"I Think I Could Turn and Live with Animals."You probably know it, but I'm posting the lines I like for the pleasure of re-reading them, except for the last 2 lines, which I don't get.

The whole essay is excellent but this paragraph, in particular. nails why Gaza is the death knell for the West's claim to moral authority.

In these terrible days, I think about this quote from Lillian Hellman & I'm telling myself I refuse to be one of those who stand & watch, but each new onslaught ratchets up my fear of retribution.Anyone have tips for what they do when they hesitate about signing a petition, going to a protest, etc.?

The author really nails it.The text describes how centrist Democrats have rallied again the election of Mamdani instead of endorsing him.

Why do so many lifelong Democrats not seem to know what havoc Clinton wrought, from gutting welfare, expanding the prison population, paving the way for the deportations of today, and promoting the weakening of mortgage requirements that was the stimulus for the 2008 crash. It infuriates me. (Vox)

I am going to put this aside to read on a day when things are looking a little better because I know it will make me start balling. But thanks for posting.I hope you can get a dog soon. It won't be Kirby, but it will make the world a little brighter. I'd be nuts if I didn't have Alma to calm me down.

Great, so you have 2 now, right. I wish I could have 2,but the one I have makes my husband's life miserable barking at him when he gets near her turf on the 2nd floor,I don't dare mention it.This is her in the heat wave of two days ago. I've tried to instill her with a sense of decorum but no dice.

What's the dog situation at your house now. Still just the one? And I thought you might appreciate one of the stars of today's demonstration, which by Connecticut small town standards was pretty big.

I totally loved this gif. As my husband has often said--and he's known me a very long time--he can't even imagine me without a dog by my side. Meet Alma, whose relaxed attitude toward life is help keeping me sane in these awful days.

I also take refuge in my garden on a regular basis. These bushes have faded now, but for a couple of weeks they would lift my spirits. Now I have to turn to poppies and peonies. I think if i didn't garden, I'd take to drink these days. Got any pics you'd like to share?

One of my favorites from her, "Why Are Your Poems so Dark?"

What's his name? I just love his sweet face. Attached is Alma in her favorite pose. Forgive me if I sent it already. I think she is darling and am convinced that everyone else would find her equally adorable, so I may have sent it before this.

@cwalworth.bsky.social This is a Triptych my husband created from different window photos taken from our house. I thought you would like it, but then I'm prejudiced. I think he is a genius with the camera.

For those who are struggling to stay sane,I find this Muriel Rukeyser poem an aid to sanity. It reminds me that there are a lot of us struggling to win this war on everything many of us believe It can't do the work of demonstrations, petitions, boy-cotts,letters, strikes etc but it can keep you sane.

If I were slicker when it came to using images, I would have taken a video, which would have better showed that for New Haven, Connecticut, this was a very big demonstration today.

One of our opossum friends, investigating the mess hall my husband built to let them eat out of the rain. I am also a real opossum fan ever since @rich1047.bsky.social got me interested in them.

Does anyone know when Sagan made this amazingly accurate prediction about the media? Thankfully, we the people, or at least many of us, have not fulfilled his prophecy but with that exception, his predictive powers were pretty spot on.

When you see the post, don't make the mistake I did of reading it to the end where she acknowledges no law was broken but a lot of "barging" into places was done and he and others broke school rules. Hardly "clear and present danger." Can you tell she writes for The Atlantic?

@seriousli.bsky.social Here's my dog sleeping on her back like yours only minus the blankets.
