She sits up and holds out the wolf's head trinket the elven man returned to her. “He gave me back my charm. Freely. There was no fear in his eyes. He is not like the other shem above.” A text passage that reads: They look down at her with an expression that reads as both pity and disbelief. “Look, I want to believe they're not all bad, Kal. Is that so wrong?” “It is if they kill you.” Mewyn knows they're right. All the same stories have been told through the ages: the Creators, in their infinite wisdom, saved their clan from the shem’s slavery. Driven to the coast, those of the first sea-dwellers cast their bodies into the frigid waters to escape a most horrible fate. There, they slipped beneath the waves, and assumed a more suitable form. Some say it was magic, some say it was the natural course of things, but they were all changed. Tails formed where feet once held them aloft, protective scales grew across their delicate skin, and gills sprouted along their ribs to allow them to breathe as they once did on land.
