It's the last day I'm at work before my exhibition William Yang's Mardi Gras comes down and it's been a privilege and a joy to talk to people who remember the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as it was 20 to 40 years ago.
An exhibition wall text titled "William Yang's Mardi Gras" reads: "I’ve finally figured out what Mardi Gras is. It’s the re-enactment of a ritual. A ritual we have worked out over the years as defining and celebrating a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex culture." William Yang, Friends of Dorothy (2014). The National Library of Australia is home to the collections of Australia’s great storytellers. William Yang is one of these raconteurs. By unifying photography and performance in his live monologues illustrated with slide projections, Yang is able to tell compelling stories of his family, friends, communities and himself.Since 1981 Yang has documented the masses of people who fill Oxford Street every February for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras parade on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people. Yang’s photographs provide an insider’s perspective into this famous protest-turned-festival. This selection from the National Library of Australia’s collection of Yang’s photographs reveals Sydney’s gay communities of the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Through his Mardi Gras images, Yang chronicles the fight for gay liberation, the diversity of Australian identity and the celebration of queer life. Hi! Since there's so many new people I thought I'd reintroduce myself! I'm a curator of exhibitions working and living on Ngunnawal and Ngambri lands in Australia. I work a lot with contemporary and archival photography collections, and pretend I'm a photographer with an interest in alt. processes.

We're starting a new campaign this week, so the book itself is blank, but the cover was a gift from the same group.
