Wow, because of the uncertainties around NIH funding and endowment taxing, Stanford just announced a staff hiring freeze (essential and faculty hires not impacted). The US is continually causing self inflicting wounds.

Shutting down medical research — not just within NIH, but everywhere that’s funded by NIH — will have long-term effects on medicine & short-term effects on state, higher education & hospital budgets. This affects all of us, not just researchers.
The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!
That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

My PhD thesis was on pediatric cancers. It’s so underfunded- most money comes charities started by parents of affected children, which can only go so far. This money was DESPERATELY needed, and to have it snatched away at the last second…
A leading pediatric cancer group 2 days ago celebrated the child cancer research funding 👇🏽- until President Musk & VP Trump demanded cuts… and it came out of the bill. 💔
