OTOH my mom proudly typed her own thesis (and like many women of her generation had typing class in case she became a secretary) and she now henpecks on the keyboard today. 🤷♀️

Yup. Ours are taking standardized tests on computers years before [they will] get instruction on operating a computer and typing.
