The Happy Prince (Oscar Wilde). The story of the relnshp between a statue of a prince and a sparrow absolutely gutted me. I was six years old when my father read it to me. I was inconsolable. I’m 55 and still can’t read it without sobbing. One of the most elegant and beautiful stories ever written.
