It was only after the arrival of 400 French soldiers from Martinique that the fort was retaken. The French forces ended the rebellion after months of brutal conflict in May 1734. Fortsberg’s ruins still stand as a testament to the rebels' bravery.

Charles Deslondes, the leader, was captured and subjected to horrific punishment before his execution. Heads of rebels were gruesomely displayed on pikes along the Mississippi River to instill fear and suppress future resistance.
