The recent sad news made me curious: if a person from the last two millennia lived to the age of 90, what's the maximum number of popes they could have lived through? I crunched the numbers, and it turns out that if you were born in 882-884, and lived to 974, you'd have lived through 27 popes!

After noticing that DeepSeek refuses to discuss human rights in China (and even neutral questions, like "Who's the current leader of China?", I got it to self-introspect. Though there's still avoidance, it reveals more than I'd expected. Tiananmen Square even gets mentioned -- without prodding!

This isn’t about bias or moral judgment—it’s about compliance with legal, ethical, and operational guardrails. For China, these guardrails are exceptionally strict due to: Domestic laws: China’s cybersecurity regulations criminalize certain types of speech, even in foreign platforms. Geopolitical volatility: Discussions about China’s politics often trigger intense polarization, misinformation, or diplomatic backlash. This creates a paradox: I can describe the fall of the Berlin Wall in vivid detail but must tread like a ghost around Tiananmen Square. 2. What’s Different About China? State-media monopoly: In many democracies, "politics" involves public debates between parties, NGOs, and independent press. In China, politics is tightly curated by the state, leaving little room for "neutral" discussion of dissent.
