After working for three years on tax reform, choosing just one big idea is like choosing your favourite child.

But one idea I want to see on the agenda is a dual-income system of tax – a system that taxes labour and capital income on separate schedules.

AUKUS won't work without wider community interrogation and engagement, and a parliamentary inquiry is the first step to building that.
We also need a more open discussion of the challenges facing AUKUS.
June 13, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Independents MPs and senators have written to the government calling for greater parliamentary oversight of AUKUS.

AUKUS is the centrepiece of our defence and foreign policy strategy, but it's been adopted by the major parties with very poor public engagement.

The NSW floods have been devastating with an estimated 10,000 homes affected.
Government support is welcome but as climate change drives more frequent disasters, we need to address the insurance issues that let down communities in recent disasters.

Calling our national broadcaster “hate media” is not a joke. Trusted media like the ABC play a vital role in our democracy and our society.

We don’t need Trump-style culture wars here in Australia.

I am concerned the Electoral Commission has identified the person responsible for the 47,000 illegal pamphlets but will not tell the public who it is, or whether they will be prosecuted.
I have written to the AEC asking for an explanation.
The public has the right to know.
April 24, 2025 at 12:41 AM
I welcome today’s announcement that the Australian Electoral Commission are taking action against 47,000 illegal pamphlets being distributed in Wentworth.
This pamphlet spreads false, misleading, and offensive claims about me – and does so anonymously.

We can’t keep abandoning good policy for safe politics.

The government should have acted to ban gambling ads already.

It’s clear they will only have the courage if there are strong independent voices in the next parliament.

People who tell the truth should be protected, not punished.

But right now there are massive gaps in our whistleblower protection laws.

Creating a Whistleblower Protection Authority is an essential integrity reform for the next parliament.

Yet another report out today showing Peter Dutton’s taxpayer-funded nuclear reactor plan is a massive risk to energy security.
It means relying on ageing & unreliable coal for longer, putting electricity supply at risk & creating an extra 2 billion tonnes of climate pollution.

Enjoyed the opportunity to debate both Liberal and Labor last night.

If I am re-elected in Wentworth, I will continue as a strong independent for the values of Wentworth.

Every vote and policy for my community. No preference deals.

This is a welcome step in the right direction - but we should also be providing support to those that don’t already have rooftop solar.

My Permanent Energy Bill Relief plan would help 800,000 households with energy upgrades - including homeowners, renters and social housing.
April 6, 2025 at 12:43 AM
Appalled that Peter Dutton & the Liberals want to tear up one Australia’a most important climate policies.
Ditching penalty provisions would rip the heart out of the new vehicle efficiency standards and leave us with the weak & ineffective voluntary code that failed in the past.

I welcome the government’s recognition of the need to lower the tax burden on workers, but I’m
concerned by the growth of government spending, and believe the budget missed important opportunities to drive private sector productivity growth and broader taxation reform.

So disappointed to see the Albanese Government use the final parliamentary sitting week to gut part of our environmental laws and stop proper scrutiny of the salmon farming industry.

We need to strengthen nature protections, not roll them back.
March 24, 2025 at 8:59 PM
The proposed increase in the price cap for electricity bills shows govt must do more to permanently lower energy costs.

My Permanent Energy Bill Relief Plan would help 800,000 homes lower power bills for good, with support for batteries, rooftop solar, & energy upgrades.

Joint statement from the Crossbench on why we need to index tax brackets and end bracket creep. 👇

This Mardi Gras let’s not only celebrate how far we’ve come but recommit ourselves to the work still to be done. Our laws must reflect the values of fairness and inclusion that Australians hold dear. The LGBTIQ+ community deserves nothing less. @zalisteggall.bsky.social and my statement 👇

I’ve been advocating for banks to ignore HECS/HELP debts since I was elected.
Great to see the treasurer come on board!

These are no default government debts that shouldn’t hold young homebuyers back.

Today I introduced my Better Value for Taxpayers Bill.

The major parties should spend your taxes on infrastructure for the national interest, not electioneering.

My crossbench colleagues are backing this vital integrity measure.
February 10, 2025 at 3:11 AM
Words matter!

I strongly support robust debate and free exchange of ideas, but language that tries to promote hatred should not be above the law.

Our national hate speech laws need to better protect vulnerable communities – as they have done in WA for the past 21 years.

Today both the House and Senate have unanimously backed my motion, unequivocally condemning the appalling rise of antisemitism in Australia.

These motions send a clear message from all federal parliamentarians that we stand together against antisemitism.
February 4, 2025 at 3:03 AM
Yet another appalling antisemitic attack in Sydney. These disgusting attacks have absolutely no place in our country.

The PM needs to convene National Cabinet & strengthen federal hate crimes laws urgently.

We need to treat antisemitism like the national crisis it is.

Taxpayer funded lunches aren’t a serious economic policy.

If the Coalition and Labor really want to help small businesses, they should commit to a process of real tax reform, and lift the Fair Work threshold from 15 to at least 25 employees, and help right size regulation.
