A letter to the Daily Telegraph
In focusing much of your coverage of the first public speech by the new head of MI6 on their fashion choices, you write, "MI6 chiefs so rarely speak in public that when they do, every aspect of their appearance is closely scrutinised for hidden messages or ciphers" (The spy who bugged me: MI6 chief mirrors Moneypenny with her brooch, 15 December 2025). Yet when their predecessor gave their first public speech, your coverage made no mention of their clothing or jewellery (China’s ‘overconfidence’ threatens to spill over into conflict, warns MI6 chief, 30 November 2021). Is it just a coincidence that it is the female head of MI6 who gets her appearance dissected while the male head of MI6 only got his views of China and Russia dissected?
