My Monaro example was silly …. I was sort of joking just to show an asset that is probably not worth the paper value. A better criticism would be that IF you have this limit then it should be indexed. $3m in super sounds rich now … wait until inflation deals with it.

Pay up when you realise gains. Because if the suggested value drops that “gain” was never real. Like owning Tesla stock.

The issue is taxing unrealised gains. The notion that you tax something that hasn't been realised is absurd. Should we do that if someone owns a classic car? ... "oh, ... that Monaro is probably worth $200,000 now ... that means you've made $180,000 ... pay up please".

The true reason is because of the skill, the quantity of skill in one location, and the type of skill it is. Not because of labor cost since China stopped being a low labour cost country many years ago.
