I'm a book lover and em dash user dipping my toes into the world of creative writing through serial fiction. (https://storyalive.substack.com)
What's a book that you love that most people don't know about?

I recently read "The Sparrow" by Mary Doria Russell based on someone's sci-fi recommendation. It's not a book you find on the usual sci-fi lists, but I really liked it. I want more recommendations like that.

Someone called me a rock star the other day for doing a good job on something, and now I want to buy a leather jacket and maybe put a streak of color in my hair.

I am deeply invested in Carl and Donut's relationship! If this dumb series makes me cry, I'm going to be really mad!!

*Deep sigh. Goes back to reading*

What inspires you to write? I wrote my first screenplay after watching a really awful horror movie and thinking "I can write something that bad!"

The best thing about rainy weather is sitting by the fire and reading (or writing) a good story. Sometimes I swear the flames speak to me!

The latest chapter of FIRE HOUSE is now alive!

The largest toothed predator in action. If this were the cover of a novel, I would totally buy that book!
I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

Asking for an author’s book at a library is a wonderful thing to do. The library buys the book, maybe even multiple copies, which really does help authors. A simple request can spread a lot of good around.

Also I just love libraries and I’m always happy when someone checks out one of my books. 📚
Hey, I know books are expensive and money is tight right now.

But if there's a brand new book you really wanna read — including my own Lessons in Magic and Disaster — you can help get the book into way more hands by requesting it from your local library!

It's easy! Check your library's website.

I was excited to see Cassandra Khaw had a gruesome new book out, but so disappointed with the cover! I'm a fan because of the scary cover of Nothing But Blackened Teeth, which dared me to read it! If I didn't know CK's work, I never would have noticed this new book that looks like so many others.

I'm curating a book basket for a Halloween raffle prize and am looking for recs for great vampire books that aren't Dracula, Salem's Lot, or Interview with the Vampire. Any suggestions?

Sometimes the best way to escape the horrors of reality is to write your own scary story. The latest chapter of FIRE HOUSE is now alive!

The coroner said his death was caused by “traumatic asphyxiation,” which is a physician’s way of saying his neck was crushed by who-knows-how-many pounds of pressure from an iron gate programmed to close regardless of what lies in its path.

Listening to an audio book is not the same as reading. It's like completing a marathon on roller skates. You still exerted effort and accomplished the task, but it was an entirely different experience from someone who ran 26 miles. It still counts toward your books "read" list, though.

I love Halloween because it's a holiday where you can let your creativity run wild. I will never work as a set decorator in Hollywood, but thanks to my "gift for thrift," the vampire lair I'm creating at work is going TO BE EPIC!

Sometimes I sit at my computer and think about the infinite number of cool things that are just beyond my fingertips if I could only think of the right search term to find them.

When Neema turned 80 years old, she decided she’d had enough foolish small talk for one lifetime and stopped speaking to those around her. Now, at 106 years of age, it had been more than 25 years since her last utterance, which was an exasperated shout of Hell’s Bells! I’m going home!

As a new fiction writer, I enjoy the challenge of honing a prompt until an AI image tool gives me a decent version of a scene in my head to illustrate a story. Does that make me an amoral thief whose writing should be shunned? I know what Substack thinks. What say you on Bluesky? #writingcommunity

I just watched Whiplash again after seeing it years ago. What a perfectly crafted film! There's not a single wasted scene. I was on the edge of my seat (again!), and it's a movie about jazz music!

I wish people would link to Bookshop.org or their local bookstore rather than Amazon when writing articles like "The 10 best sci-fi novels you've probably never read."

I've said it before, I'll say it again: I TOTALLY judge a book by it's cover.
