their legal battles and the overlapping names of different conda related things have unfortunately made a bunch of people more allergic to the word conda than they otherwise were 😭

there is also some nuance here: conda the package manager is free, conda-forge the community maintained repository of open source packages is free, anaconda inc and their distribution of open source conda packages vetted for legal compliance reasons is not free and recently started chasing $$$
