Luke fell back a half-step in response, clutching his Bible like a shield. "You're not supposed to be here," he said, the familiar press of English a comforting weight in his mouth. Johnathan stopped and huffed out a laugh. "Six years and a 13 hour flight, and that's what you say?" "You can't just... T-they sent me away for good reason," Luke said, because he'd been taught to, because it had been repeated so many times it had started to sound real. But he could taste the ashes as soon as the words hit his tongue. His older brother watched him closely for a moment. Then, "Do you want me to leave?"

A heavy storm over the farmland and Arlene spots someone wandering along the backroads.
The storm was rolling in fast as Arlene got back on the road. The rain was coming down in sheets now, lashing at the windshield and collecting in puddles in the dirt. She put her coffee in the cracked cupholder in the center console and flexed her hands on the wheel. It wasn't like she'd never driven in storms before, but this one had spun up fast. Through the haze of what was quickly becoming a downpour, she caught sight of something shifting at the side of the road. She slowed the truck in case it was a deer, but after a moment of watching through the quarter-second of clear glass that followed the windshield wipers, Arlene realized she was watching someone walking. The woman was rail-thin, in city clothes, and without even a coat or an umbrella. She staggered when her low heels caught in the mud, and Arlene made up her mind then to stop. People helped each other out here, whether you were an outsider or not. At least that's what they told everyone.

They'd known they'd need more than what they had for all the summer chores, but they'd been waiting until they hit the last of their supply. A storm rolls in and Arlene gets Robin out of the rain. - 💎
She drove up past the woman, slowly so she didn't kick water at her, and pulled the truck to what passed for the shoulder. The passenger door opened a little too fast with the wind and Arlene braced a hand on it, poking her head out into the storm. "Hey, Miss?" she called. "D'ya need a ride?" The woman scraped her dark hair out of her face, pretty despite her dishevelment, and blinked at her. She seemed a little confused, like maybe the truck wasn't actually there. Eventually though, she nodded. "Well, come on," Arlene prompted before crawling back into the driver's seat. About thirty seconds ticked by and she was about to crawl over and call again when a pale hand with shimmery gray acrylic nails caught hold of the door handle. The woman climbed up awkwardly and Arlene had the impression that she was used to gracefully lowering herself into limos, not clambering up into work trucks. Still, she managed to get the door shut even with the wind and Arlene kept the truck in park for a moment while she composed herself. "Storm came out of nowhere, huh?" she said, offering a clean handkerchief. "It did," the women replied, drying her face before patting at her hair, probably so it wouldn't drip into her eyes. "Does that happen often around here?" she asked, her voice clear like birdsong. Arlene nodded, suddenly aware of her own country drawl. "Moreso in the summer, but yeah. Can I ask your name?" "Robin. Thank you so much, Miss..." "Arlene," she said. And then, because she had to say it, "Arlene Lancaster."

The ruts in the dirt roads pulled at the wheel like curious children as Arlene started toward town. It wasn't much of a drive in terms of distance, but the weaving network of backroads always made it feel like she were headed somewhere much more interesting than Brakerville. The town itself wasn't anything offensive, the bulk of it being a small general store, a hole-in-the-wall diner, and an even smaller gas station separated by the only stoplight in the area. A couple small clusters of houses dotted the flat land around it and beyond that... well, Arlene had never gotten to see very far beyond that. The kid behind the counter at the general store addressed her as Mrs. Lancaster and covered the change for her when she realized she was short 53 cents. Scott hadn't let her get a card, but the kid didn't know that. No one did. And that was a large part of the problem. But she smiled back at the kid - maybe college-age with rusty red hair - collected her bag and her rope, and managed to get back to the truck before she felt the first crack in her mask for the day. Not This said something caged behind her ribs. Not this town. Not this man. Not this life. She shoved the feeling down and shut the driver's side door a little harder than she meant to. A distant roll of thunder growled under the unsteady roar of the truck's engine. The sun crept behind the darkening clouds and Arlene was relieved to see the gas gauge was nearly on half.

Richard scanned the crowd. It didn't take him long to pick the man out of the lineup along the back fence. He was tall and thin, with deep red hair in a carefully careless style and a close-fitting racetrack suit that Richard would have guessed was custom if he didn't know better. No one in the under-city had that kind of cash. "Lead Horseman?" he asked even though he was decently sure of the answer already. "Yessir." Len set a heavy glass full of thick, dark liquid down near Richard's arm. "And I don't want no trouble between you two."

There were no official racetracks, even in the under-city. Like with most things, they were left to find their own resources. The result was a shared mental map of twisting, broken streets that wound beneath the Third City. Dead neon signs and cracked asphalt that probably dated back before the War stretched beneath the strips of shadow cast by the skyways - a spiderweb network of fast and brutal death if a Rider let their attention slip.

Creed's ride was sleek, all white and chrome - something that looked like it was running about 100 sitting still. It was the kind of bike that was designed for the rider to drape themself over, controlling it with their whole body. Richard's rig seemed brutish by comparison, junkyard relic that it was.

"If you can change the rules of engagement at the last second, why can't I?" "If I hadn't hit the brakes -" "You'd be dead." Richard let the silence settle. If he listened, he could hear Creed drawing hard, slow breaths. "But you're not."

"Not you, cager," Creed snapped, never taking his eyes from Richard. A crooked smile touched his mouth. "How about it? You win, you walk." Richard fought the urge to fall back a step. "And if I lose?" Creed tipped his head toward the river. "Hope you're a strong swimmer." There was a time in the distant past where that wouldn't have been much of a threat, but now, with the river churning with broken glass and rusted metal, falling in was likely to be a death sentence. Weak moonlight and saturated neon caught at the sharp edges in the water and Richard swallowed hard.

to understand others: understand that at their core, everyone is a cemetery. the provable and unprovable past has shaped them in ways even they are unaware of, from the obvious pain of dead dreams and lost loves, to the more subtle shades of hurt: the homesickness, the loneliness, and the slowing pulse of buried potential. people are haunted by every dead thing they carry with them. "If you find me so reprehensible, perhaps I should issue you a small challenge" the man had said, in front of a sizable crowd gathered in front of the building. "Come and speak with me. For as long as you like. If you still find what I am so horrible, you may return to your preaching in peace." Isaac had hesitated. It was an olive branch, certainly, but he had also been pretty clearly called ignorant. Alexander had waited for him to collect his thoughts. Then a murmur rippled through the crowd around them, and Isaac forced himself to speak. "Fine," he'd said, anger keeping his voice low. "If you truly think you have anything useful to say, I'll entertain the notion as well." Alexander had only smiled, slightly crooked. "I trust you know where to find me?" "I do." And that had been the end of it, for then at least. The vampire had vanished into the crowd and Isaac had soon been distracted by assuring the congregation that of course he would be as careful as possible when dealing with this demon.

The thought of texting one of the guys she’d met on campus crossed her mind, but she shrugged it off just as quickly. It was close to midnight already and while that was unlikely to matter to some of them, Jordan wasn’t exactly feeling social. Still, she had to do something to stop feeling so sluggish... Her go-to during times like these was the OnlyFangs page of a gorgeous blond vampire she'd stumbled across one late night during her second semester. His name was Azriel, and Jordan's adoration of him only barely overrode the hard twist of envy she often felt while watching him. He was lean and pretty, with sharp features, a sharper tongue, and the kind of confidence that Jordan could only dream of having.
