Alistair is Professor in Environmental Science at the University of York. Alistair’s research focuses on understanding emerging and future ecological and health risks of chemical pollutants.
Will Joshua Templeton spent two days with us working on a photo shoot for an outreach event we are working on. We visited a few of our river monitoring sites and met some of the monitoring team.

I had an enjoyable two days this week hosting a TV crew from South Korea. They took lots of footage covering different aspects of our work on chemical pollution in rivers. The documentary should be released in December.

The ECOMIX project monitoring team met at the Merchant Adventurers Hall on Monday to celebrate the end of our year long study on levels of chemical pollution in Yorkshire's rivers. The group collected around 1000 weekly composites and generated more than 65000 data points.

It is the final week of the ECOMIX Yorkshire river monitoring programme. The first set of samples from the final week were taken today.

Storms Darragh and Eowyn have decimated our ECOMIX sampling site at Howsham Mill on the River Derwent. Amazingly, the autosampler survived and produced a full set of samples. A before and after photo is below.

Martha, Amy and Ivo from the ECOMIX project team have given an update today on our work exploring chemical pollution in UK rivers. It was great to see an audience of 140 people participating.

The level of the River Ouse is very high this morning as we collect the second set of ECOMIX samples of 2025.

Had a good start to 2025 today. Jun Li and I spent the day collecting samples from the North Yorkshire ECOMIX autosamplers. It will be interesting to see the effect of the Christmas holiday on water quality in the region.

We had a wonderful Departmental Christmas party yesterday evening. Thanks to Milin Patel ('the Willy Wonka of Water') for a fantastic presentation on water and for leading us through a water tasting exercise. The Scottish and Yorkshire tap waters were the most highly rated.

Had a fantastic evening this weekend visiting the Illuminate event at Burnby Hall near Pocklington. If you live in North or East Yorkshire or are visiting the area, I recommend a trip to see the display.
