And that future looks (to me, at least; my prognostications have been wrong before) like a Republican party fractured between those who double down and try to be "Trump II" (and inevitably fail), and those who go the GWB route of downplaying that they ever supported him in the first place.

One way or another, Trump's time as the head of the Republican Party is coming to an end. That's the cold, hard reality that every Republican is going to have to face. If the Grim Reaper doesn't finally get him, term limits will. The Republicans made a Faustian bargain, and the bill is coming due.

I don't think this is going to move the needle even a little bit where his cultlike base is concerned, but it COULD be the thing that makes his political allies turn on him - they are DEFINITELY starting to consider what the post-Trump GOP is going to look like, and this is an opportune off-ramp.

God, this makes me so viscerally angry. Aside from the obvious fact that this is a bitter insult to the sanctity of life itself, it's preying on people's grief in order to sell them a poor facsimile of something that can never be replaced.
