me as a kid: wow I can't wait until we have robots and computers for everything

me now: if this toaster makes me download an app I am slipping out into the night to start a new life as a mysterious figure occasionally glimpsed in the fog

Solidarity with resident doctors striking in England and Wales today.

For anyone unconvinced, the monthly take home pay of an NHS resident doctor today is only around £100 greater than it was in 2008.

The government could easily afford to resolve this. This strike is their fault.

Always good to see Dr Rae get his due. Top work from the Arctic Institute here.
Great long read here for a Friday lunchtime, about Scotland's relationship with the #Arctic and the creation of an Arctic Identity - including special mention for Dr. John Rae, the Orcadian explorer who "changed the history of the North American Arctic"

How Scotland is Carving out its Arctic Identity
By capitalizing on its status as the world's most northerly non-Arctic nation Scotland can strengthen informal diplomacy for greater security.

Such a great week, fantastic to hear about all the great #Arctic work going on across Scottish universities @mastscot.bsky.social Annual Science Meeting
Great write-up summarising the highlighted research at our recent @mastscot.bsky.social session - the first time ScAN has been present at the ASM, showcasing some of the marine related Arctic research that is currently underway at Scottish HE institutions

I'm going to start working on this, and will add to it as more major media outlets join Bluesky.

I expect the pace to pick up very soon and very significantly.

Major media has let us down significantly over the last ten years, but it's still vital to know what's being reported. go.bsky.app/2JyEju6

Why would anybody do this? Sad and pointless.

(And yet looking into my mind, I think of the disparity between my instantaneous emotional reaction to this versus my sluggish emotional reaction to climate change - illustrates a problem of thinking)

Afternoon from the Fairy Pools on Skye. Had a very 'last days of summer' vibe, you can even see the massive wall of rain coming at me from the Cuillin Hills.

Yes, it was freezing.

Still vaguely annoyed that Sotheby’s chose to have today’s auction online only. I wanted gavels! Drama! Fistfights!

And hopefully the spectacle of UK Museums uniting like superheroes to save the Franklin Expedition daguerreotypes from vanishing into the hands of a supervillain.

Good morning from (what is most likely) where Harry Goodsir, Acting Assistant Surgeon on the 1845 Franklin Expedition, is laid to rest.

The remains were originally identified as being Lieutenant Henry Le Vesconte, but the presence of a gold tooth and bone sampling pushed the envelope toward Goodsir
