Much of what is seen is illegal under European law. Yet the march is allowed to persist annually, to circumvent lax bans with no enforcement and to get away with ostentatious justifications.

This is the movement for which we see an explosion of sympathy and historical revisionism in Romania today.

#Romania must never rehabilitate fascism.

In the power struggle between the Legionnaires and Antonescu, Hitler ultimately sided with Antonescu:
The Legionary Movement was considered too brutal and recalcitrant even for the Nazis.

90 people were shot in the Jilava forest, only 3 managed to escaped and told the story of the horrors they experienced, including Rabbi Gutman.

Many others were killed in their own homes.

Throughout the city, 35 synagogues were destroyed, 616 shops and 547 homes were looted.

...I was beaten here too, and in the evening, as soon as it got dark, we were all put in a car and taken back to the forest: we were again lined up two by two and shot quickly.

I don't know how I even realized that I was still alive this time again."

But the bloodiest place was the Jilava forest.

Testimony of Rabbi Gutman: “I did not know where I was, I saw that my sons were both dead and covered in blood [...] I set off on the road ahead, naked, dizzy, in the middle of winter, in the snow and I arrived at a house [...]

On January 23, 15 of the Jews seized three days earlier are taken to the Communal Slaughterhouse on the Dambovita. They are hung alive on cattle hooks. The Legionnaires wrote “Kosher meat” on the bodies.

The Jewish neighborhood in Union Square is not spared, Vasile Adamache Str., Popa Nan Str. - the area where my grandmother lived, 6 years old at the time.

The Vacaresti and Dudesti neighborhoods – then heavily Jewish, are sacked – synagogues are desecrated and burned, shops looted, homes vandalized.

And so they do. On Jan. 20, the Legionnaires begin to wreak havoc throughout Bucharest.

They kidnap hundreds, even thousands of Jews, torture, beat them violently in various legionnaire centres under the pretext of interrogations.

Women are raped in front of their families.

The latter brings tensions between Antonescu and the Legionnaires to a boil. On January 20, 1941 the Legionaries rebel. A confrontation w. the army follows.

The Legionary press writes "If it comes to shooting, let's not target each other; We have, you know, who to shoot at!"

The brutal fascist legionary movement is characterized by fanatical extreme violence, terror, beatings, looting & a strategy of intimidation designed to ultimately rid Romania of Jews. In addition to antisemitic violence, they commit numerous prominent political assassinations.

Shortly after taking power, tensions arise between Antonescu and the Legionnaires. Both have a virulently antisemitic doctrine, but a difference in style: Antonescu proposes a gradual, legalistic antisemitic policy.

In September 1940, during a political crisis, Marshal Ion Antonescu and the Legionary Movement come to power, forming the National Legionary State. Rights of Jews are severely curtailed.
