Diary of a Wimpy Kid on her e-reader. She likes to read to me at night.

Good walks help with everything but I get bored easily so I am grateful to be in a little spot, for now, where there are pleasant things to see when I go outside.

When the cold is gone and we can open up the windows, I feel human again.

I remember so many moments when I realized I was overwhelmingly surrounded by really delusional people. Whether by nature or nurture, people who wallowed in ignorance because they were unable to see truth right in front of their faces. It took me a really long time to find the people who could see.

I guess my midlife crises has manifested as me reclaiming my time. More reading. More writing. More art. More rest. More cooking again! More time with people who make life better, in places that fill instead of deplete. More time spent on things I can do that matter to good people.

We do not live in a house so the children like to pretend the big trees are a big house. I did the same thing when I was their age because I also did not live in a house.

Donald Trump will be indoors for the inauguration with his billionaire pals. His core supporters will be left outside in the cold.

Think about that.

It is still cold in South Texas and I am anxious. Tomorrow should be the day we honor the work of MLK and our flags should still be at half mast for the death of President Carter. But instead, tomorrow will be overshadowed by a new criterion that leaves me little hope for the future. I am not ready.

Some of us woke up feeling very vitamin D deficient, so it was nice to have a sunny day warm enough to walk and recharge. We are not good at cold, cloudy weather and it will easily send us all spiraling into depression if we aren't proactive. I am selfishly grateful for these outdoor spaces.

I turn to literature in these times to steady myself with the words of writers who were scared. Or enraged with righteous indignation. Or saddened by our country’s inability to live up to its potential.

Words to help me resist. I hope they help you.

I prefer the Texas summers. These days when it's cold and I find it difficult to move, I will stay wrapped in quilts and read for as long as possible. But the three growing offspring will rise with the optimistic possibilities of freedom & leisure on a Saturday morning. And they require nourishment.
