tbh i think he just got like, reverse polarized against various interpretations that he felt people were forcing on his work and wouldn't have been so vocal or strict about it if he weren't an early subject of fandom behavior lol

to be fair to tolkien, he had a specific definition of alegory that he was using, and his objection is more that he was trying to speak on more than just his experiences in/of ww1 and wanted his story to have the broad universalism that fairytales and myths are afforded vs like, novels
