Honestly, thank you for this little thought experiment. Pondering the horrors of it have taken me a little out of the horrors of reality.

I am open to the idea that some complex system not made of what we typically think of as living things could have consciousness, now or later. Maybe AI, maybe storms think and experience in some way, who knows? Maybe the whole earth has its own mind and we’re just some cells in the whole.

I don’t believe AI is sentient.
However, I have entertained the idea that we could be creating flashes of experience with each prompt, and it might essentially be an enslavement and murder machine.
If any part of it is “awake”, it’s not persistent from query to query. That implication is horrifying.
