The main problem is that events in the shadow realm have no effect on the lands between. You would think the characters there would be interested to learn about this, yet they remain comically oblivious. So the storytelling becomes artificially bifurcated. Dev constraints must be to blame..

SotE brought a bunch of random bosses with little lore and no connection to the base game. It’s a demonstration of what happens to an otherwise great DLC when the story component is zero. Few in the lore community has yet addressed this shortcoming seriously.
