The red poppy, inspired by Flanders’ fields and McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields”, became a 1921 symbol of remembrance. Worn over the heart, its red petals honour the fallen, the black centre mourns them, and the green leaf signifies hope.

#ArnosVale cemetery in #Bristol holds the impressive Humpage family grave. Thomas, the father, was a respected #engineer, while his son, Officer’s Cook 1st Class William Thomas Humpage, died aged 29 of illness aboard HMS New Zealand.

In Sennen cemetery, #Cornwall, lies Lilian Wyles, the first fully attested woman C.I.D. officer & early member of the Metropolitan Women Police after #WW1. Her grave has pebbles bearing visiting officers’ badge numbers.

In Greenbank Cemetery, #Bristol, lies Private H. V. Mugford, Gloucestershire Regiment, aged 22, died 22 Oct 1918. His regiment’s badge bears a #sphinx above “Egypt”, marking their 1801 Egyptian campaign.
