Full-time engine dev for Bevy: an open source Rust game engine.

I design games, make all manner of things, and occasionally go outside ;) Once upon a time I was a plant ecologist!
The line count is high, as expected for a vendoring PR. Really thorough review: love to see the beautiful histograms from a *reviewer*. Code is good, and the initial improvements are nice.

Approving and pinging maintainers for a "speak now or forever hold your peace'.

A classic programming optimization: invert your containers based on the expected structure of them to save lookups in the tight loop. 30% speedup on a stress test: I like to see those kind of perf numbers!

Last Thursday I took a day off work to go blackberry picking on Vancouver Island. What a lovely decision that was! They are *everywhere*: growing wild in all of the marginal spaces around town. I picked two quarts in a couple hours, dropped one off for a local friend, and then quickly ate the rest!

This PR (which is D-Trivial, and only needed 1 approval), has accumulated not one, not two, but *more than 50* approvals. Why? Who knows! The community has spoken, and I'm pretty sure Francois was *forced* to merge this in.

Let this be a lesson: you too can review and approve Bevy PRs!

More widgets! This time, a scrollbar! I even have a janky screenshot of a video recording of it for you! Very pleased about this: scrollbars are incredibly useful for both games and tools.

And more widget types are key to evaluating bigger-scale changes to UI paradigms.

A polished commercial #visualnovel? In #rust?! Made with #bevy?! Better believe it :D

Long Story 2 looks super cute, and I'm beyond happy that our #opensource engine could play a role in bringing it to life. Check it out at store.steampowered.c...

Vacation has been lovely: family, nature, #photography and a spot of light #bikepacking. I spent a night on Gabriola Island, which TBH is basically Stardew Valley IRL. Now it's time to show the in-laws around BC :D

And humans! I'm really more of a nature photographer but it's nice to take shots of my loved ones and myself from time to time.

Another beautiful little #bc hike today, this time to Jack Point. And the #photography to back it up. Nature first.

Vancouver Island is astonishingly beautiful. So much nature! I'm really happy here :D #photography

I was run over by a truck as a kid and ended up in a wheelchair for some formative years of my life, and let me tell you: damn it feels good to have wheels again!

Wheelchairs (and crutches) were always about personal freedom and fucking around to me: biking gives me exactly the same feeling <3

Honestly, this is the sort of thing that will blow your mind if you've been playing with #rustlang or simply #programming for a while.

Bevy 0.16's docs are going to ship with color-coded tags for key traits. Just a bit of HTML! Now with `Relationship`! Merging :D

This weekend's little hike took us out to the Cable Bay Trail, where we spontaneously followed the sound of sea lions to find them resting on floating logs in the bay!

I think I might like it here. This is Ammonite Falls, BC. I can go outside even in the winter!

Alright, basic camera following is a go. smooth_nudge is great :D

I want to do more, but I'm being summoned to go make dinner and it's the end of the work day. Bah! See you next week, unless I sneak in more :p

Oh hey, that was easy. My little dude is walking around! Well, floating. I think that the offset from the capsule isn't correct / needed? Radius is also a bit big.

Well, I just fell through the floor after removing that offset. Hmm.

Okay, in order for any of this to make sense, it's time for a better character model. I really need something that's at least orientable :( Here's a quick-and-dirty little dude that will do for now:

Alright, sweet: I have a little character controller demo scene up and running! Thanks @jondolf.bsky.social :D Feels pretty good TBH. Time to set up Git LFS and commit this. After that, some basic code hygiene stuff to start defining the initial project structure 😅

Some breathtaking #photography from my early morning bike ride. Did I miss an appointment because my phone died and I got lost? Yes. Was it worth it? Yes!

What a lovely day exploring Nanaimo. Lots of car dominated suburbs, but still shockingly beautiful, friendly and not covered in snow. This is going to be fun!
