At @aaas.org, I spoke with a #SciPol Fellow whose fellowship has been impacted. As a scientist, I’m concerned these challenges in impacting the U.S.'s scientific edge. While many discuss scientific breakthrough, there’s clearly uncertainty when the conversation shifts to the political situation.

What you see is a room of #scicommunicators, #scientists, and #newsroom reporters doing Improv! The concept of “yes, and” is so ever important to make sure your message gets across with an understanding of your audience. #activelistening Thanks Mark for this session! #AAASmtg

Back to my #SciComm vibe! @phuturedoctors.bsky.social, @byjasonpdinh.bsky.social, & Joe Palca shared distinct perspectives on developing & covering science stories. It’s fascinating to observe the dynamics, making it all super engaging—really useful for designing my #SciComm workshop at Pittcon 😛.

I’m encouraged by the so-far-so-good results of #CAR-T cells in human clinical trials for autoimmune diseases! Side note: If you’re interested in a clever twist of CAR-T, called “CAART,” that could reduce global immunosuppression, check out Dr. Aimee Payne’s work @columbiauniversity.bsky.social
Living Drugs for the Skin, and Beyond
In the lab, Aimee Payne, Columbia’s new chair of dermatology, is transforming cells into living drugs for autoimmune diseases of the skin.

Just attended an incredible #storytelling workshop w/ Frank Sessno, Julia Cort & Harrison Watson! One question, “What makes you compelling?” made me reflect on how storytelling isn’t just about facts, but about characters & connection. Can’t wait to incorporate these in my Pittcon #scicomm workshop!

As a former glyco-scientist, #microbiome fascinates me! In this panel, Profs @laurakiessling.bsky.social, Susan Lynch, @contaminatedsci.bsky.social, and George Gerber explored live microbial #biotherapeutics, colonization success, and how ML tools are advancing the field. So much potential!

#DYK? The EPA approved a game-changing RNA pesticide in 2024! It uses RNAi to target Colorado potato beetles with minimal off-target effects, saving crops and $500M annually in losses. Prof Luis Jurat-Fuentes from UTennessee shared exciting insights on next-gen pest control. #Agriculture #Innovation

There is a wealth of scientific and social evidence showing how diversity efforts positively impact society. As a scientist, I find it both unbelievable and frustrating that politics is playing such a monopolizing role in this progress. #DiversityMatters
