I would even phrase it not as "to not have access to those words," but "to choose not to use those words." Because you can't not have access to those words as long as they exist, the question is whether you choose to use them and why.

The only reason to start with the insurance company is that they can clarify why they didn't pay it, then you know what to tell the PCP's office when you go to them.

I don't carry them around or use them often, but yes, there are still circumstances where a check is the best or preferred way to pay someone.
