Obsolete and underpowered flight controls quickly gave out, leading to the crew loosing control of the aircraft. Both incidents ended up with no survivors, and crashing near the Warszawa-Okęcie (EPWA) airport. These incidents caused LOT to retire the Il-62 and replace it with the Boeing 767 in 1989

The pilots had to use more engine power, resulting in increased wear on the engines, wear that LOT maintenance services couldn't diagnose as they had no equipment to do so. Two Il-62s flying for LOT crashed in 1980 and 1987. The cause was improper maintenance by the airline. To save money during the economic crisis in early 80s Poland, their airplanes were flying with more fuel then was needed not to buy it in the western countries and more cargo then they should carry

The later Il-62M variant was upgraded with the Soloviev D-30 engine, added spoilerons and fin fuel tanks. This model also had water balast tanks to balance the aircraft

Before advanced avionics were developed, the Il-62 had a 5 crew cockpit, with a Pilot, Co-Pilot, Flight Engineer, Navigator and a Radio Operator. As newer versions of the aircraft were developed, some positions were removed

At its time, the Il-62 was the largest airliner in the world. It had a 44m wingspan, the Boeing 747 later beat this record with a 60m wingspan. The A380, the largest airliner used today has a 73m wingspan.
