My interview with William Horwood about his novel Skallagrigg.

The film starred Richard Briers, Bernard Hill, Ian Dury, Billie Whitelaw, Jamie Beddard and Nabil Shaban and won the BAFTA for Best Single Drama in 1995.

Really looking forward to starting the journey of the final volume of The Book of Dust: The Rose Field by Philip Pullman.

I'm surprised @foliosociety.bsky.social classes Pullman as 'Young Adult' in their recent catalogue.

Genres don't matter, I suppose.

The Library: A Fragile History is a fascinating survey of how these precious community resources have been burned, banned, looted and neglected. Treasure your local library! #Books #BookSky

Dickens and Prince: A Particular Kind of Genius by Nick Hornby is an unlikely pairing of poverty, prodigy and prolific production (4 million published words and 8,000 unreleased songs) in a slim purple volume #books #BookSky

I've just finished Hatchet Job by @kermodemovie.bsky.social , a threnody to the film critic. Film criticism is alive and kicking as long as the Kermodian rant survives! #NotDeadYet #books #BookSky

Valerie Thomas's story of Winnie The Witch is a fun way for children to learn about colour. But it is also a great way to learn about the social model of #disability. #books #BookChallenge #InThePicture

I've just read Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton and it has made me think. A hare's breath is a fine and fragile thing. We must preserve space for Nature from the combine harvester of human progress. #books #BookSky #BookChallenge

Rodham by Curtis Sittenfield is a fascinating parallel universe novel where the Clintons do not marry and Hillary seeks to be the First Woman President amidst the "ambient sexism" of US society. Private lives meet US public life.

I have been meaning to read Bad Blood by @LornaSage for ages. A beautifully written memoir of an isolated and bookish post-war vicarage childhood with warring grandparents and dark secrets.

I've just finished reading Voices from Dickens' London by Michael Paterson. Lots of fascinating insights, including that the first person to wear a top hat in London was arrested for breach of the peace. #books #BookSky

I have just read Kate Atkinson's Normal Rules Don't Apply. I'm not a great fan of short stories but I'm an Atkinson fan. This Russian doll collection of inter-locking short stories are playful meditations on the end of the world. #books #booksky

I've just read Penelope Fitzgerald: A Life by Hermione Lee.

She published her first book at the age of 60, so there is hope for all of us.

Sometimes patronised by the male literary establishment, she won the #Booker and was highly rated by #JLCarr and #LPHartley.
