Child abuse at our border ⚠️

UK-France border practices are increasingly violent, with kids being hit with rubber bullets & teargas while trying to seek safety.

Safe routes are the answer. Anything less fails children and everything the UK stands for.

NGO says increased interventions have only increased danger as new data shows at least 15 children died in transit last year

A quick thread of charts showing how Trump’s economic agenda is going so far:

1) US consumers are reacting very very negatively.

These are the worst ratings for any US government’s economic policy since records began.

‼️ 2024 is the deadliest year on record for migrants.

The rising death toll highlights the need for safe, legal routes for people on the move.

There is no way any government claiming to be "centre left", or any government claiming to believe in democracy for that matter, should be looking at the way Trump has violated laws to push through his agenda and be saying, especially publicly, "this is what we need to be doing, just more of it".
Ugh. I can’t tell you how much I dislike this. To witness such cruelty, incompetence, contempt for the law and think ‘let’s have some of that’… www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

NEW: The actions of Trump and Vance in recent weeks highlight something under-appreciated.

The American right is now ideologically closer to countries like Russia, Turkey and in some senses China, than to the rest of the west (even the conservative west).

New migration statistics out today show a 4000% rise in asylum refusals for Afghans from Qtr4 ‘23 compared to Qtr 4 ‘24.

Have the Taliban been replaced with a feminist, human rights respecting democracy? Nope. Government are ‘clearing the backlog’ by refusing refugees status.

The cruelty and dehumanisation is utterly astounding.
New from The Post: "The quotas were outlined Saturday in a call with senior ICE officials, who were told that each of the agency’s field offices should make 75 arrests per day and managers would be held accountable for missing those targets." www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...
Trump officials issue quotas to ICE officers to ramp up arrests
The administration wants to increase the number of arrests from a few hundred per day to at least 1,200 to 1,500, increasing the chances that non-criminals will be detained.

It is entirely within our power to make 2025 a year where not one single person drowns attempting to cross the channel.

It is up to us to demand it, in these people’s names.

Different words, same policies. Yesterday three people died seeking safety. They knew death was a possibility, but there aren't alternatives, and as a response, Labour talk about "tougher measures", measures we already know have contributed to 2024 having highest death toll in the channel.

Respect to @danielsohege.bsky.social and others like @zoejardiniere.bsky.social for continuing to do the hard work on policy here.

But the problem is not that Labour don't know all this. It's that they do, and have made a political decision to continue with it.

Assad had hardly left the country, and European governments already close the door to Syrians, considering even to deport those who live here. Europe is losing moral authority at breathtaking speed. Not to mention the strategic shortsightedness.
No one’s quite sure of what to make of the new guys who appear to be in charge in Syria.

But European governments are looking pretty darn certain that now is the moment to start restricting Syrian asylum-seekers, and even to prepare to deport them.
