(Co-)Taught my first class today! It's a game studies course, focusing on the interplay between video games, literary texts, and history. We had some introductions to video game narratives and game studies, and we finished by playing Return of the Obra Dinn!

Had a blast at #gamescom2025 yesterday, and a lot of fun tracking down historical / ancient / mythological references!

Highlights: the Hades II update on Switch 2, a presentation on Anno 117, beating a mission in the Japanese Age of Mythology DLC, Onimusha, and, completely unrelated, LEGO Batman

if you love mythological games but you've always felt that the one thing they really needed was cars, then oh do I have good news for you

Just discovered the 2024 bullet heaven roguelike Champion Shift where you play as Arthur, Athena, Sun Wukong, Gilgamesh & more and transform into cars at will

Video games are so unrealistic

I was never really a fan of Achilles: Legends Untold, and so far the new sequel, Achilles: Survivor, has done little to convince me either - but if you like being endlessly chased by monstrous creatures as a character from (apparently not only Greek) myth, then it might be one to check out!

I have no idea if Japan is always naturally this windy, but I can't deny that it looks gorgeous #AssassinsCreedShadows

Getting ready for #DiGRA2025 in less than two weeks with a presentation on ancient history in asset stores (co-authored with Brent Van Mol), and another on coziness in historical video games. Really looking forward to this year's conference!

South of Midnight by @compulsiongames.bsky.social is a great game that's full of heart, but where it's truly extraordinary is its music. There's full-fledged songs (that I'll keep listening to when I'm not playing it) recounting the stories of the game and functioning as oral storytelling.

Had a very fun experience giving a brief talk today at the FACTS Convention in Ghent (basically, the Flemish Comic Con) about mythology and video games! I mainly spoke about emerging trends regarding diversity and inclusivity in indie games.

Really enjoyed co-presenting a Classics and Ancient History / Bristol Digital Game Lab research seminar with @richardcole.bsky.social in Bristol earlier this week! We discussed our active play experiment where we tested how/whether history impacts players' in-game character decisions.

Spending an absolutely lovely sunny day in Winchester, where I'm guided through the city by the AR Assassin's Creed Valhalla app from the 878 AD exhibition!

Logged into the Old/Bad Place for the first time in I don't know how long, and this is the first thing I see. Classical reception algorithm at work, or billionaire media platform's worrying preoccupation with Greek & Roman antiquity?
