Today I'm delighted to release my original score for Celina Liesegang & Arturo Bandinelli's experimental short film Viscera.

Set in an abandoned hotel on an island in the middle of the Atlantic, Viscera is a dance film exploring the relationship between time, memory & trauma.
Moment of appreciation for Fred Lincoln Wray Jr.
Of Shawnee descent, he grew up in a mud hut dodging KKK.
Caught TB fighting in Korean War & lost a lung. No more singing so focused on gtr.
Went on to invent the power chord on his 1st hit "Rumble", which was banned for fear of inciting gang violence.

Incidentally, Fb just reminded me that 11 years ago today Alice released her debut album China Lane, which I had the pleasure of playing on and co-producing. Happy to be making music together still, albeit remotely on this occasion.

Londoners: 2 things happening this week to which I've had the pleasure of contributing.

1. Tonight, the incomparable Alice Zawadzki performs solo at the Barbican supporting Tigran Hamasyan, and will be working her magic over a pre-recorded track I made specially.

Tigran Hamasyan | Barbican
The piano virtuoso with groove power seamlessly fuses potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his native Armenia.

How to engage with sites of trauma through sound?

I've been asking myself this since moving to Poland 7 years ago. And this week I had the honour of being invited to participate in a commemoration ceremony in the Chodówki Forest, where over 600 Jews were massacred & buried during the Holocaust.

Happy to have played a small part in this new exhibition at the Barbican.

Observatory Station is a global collaborative project that reflects on the relationship between sound & place, between reality & imagination.

Hands up: who knew Mary Lou Williams and Cecil Taylor recorded together?

A couple of shots from Kasia Witek's performance The Peace Of Wild Things, which premièred at Laban Theatre, London, earlier this month.

Music by me in collaboration with @alicepurton.bsky.social (cello, voice), James Opstad & Caius Williams (double basses)

Are Elastica having a moment, critically speaking? I keep seeing music writers mention how much they still like them.

Tbh, I forgot about this for a long time, and had to double check it was the same Donna Matthews (it was). I wonder what she's up to nowadays...
Fun fact: I was Donna Matthews' guitar teacher while we were both at Dartington circa 2006. I knew she'd previously been in a band but only found out later it was Elastica!

Kasia Witek's latest dance performance, which I've scored, premieres this week at Laban Theatre in London, commissioned by Trinity Laban Dance Collective with new music I created in collaboration with double bassist Caius Williams:

My new EP drops on Friday and I'm celebrating with a listening party. RSVP 🔗 below.

Viscera is my first film score 🎥

The release includes a specially commissioned series of photographs by MOAL, created by using extremely long exposure times to capture entire scenes of the film in single images.

Sunny Five – Candid

Somehow missed this release early last year, despite it featuring some of my favourite musicians on the planet. Such is the challenge of keeping up with an artist as prolific as Tim Berne. Great to hear him and Ducret playing together again!

Easy to hear why this is one of the great Billy Hart's favourite Coltrane recordings.

Roberta Flack – First Take

Flack's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" has always been my go-to version—at once tender and mighty.

I'd never heard this whole album though, and it's a classic. Thoughts below 🧵

Tonight's double bill:
Taylor Deupree – Stil. (2002) & Sti.ll (2024)

Glitchy ambient electronic music (Stil.) reimagined acoustically (Sti.ll), nudging it towards a post-minimalist contemporary classical soundworld.

Hypnotic listening.

@juergfrey.bsky.social & Quatuor Bozzini – Jürg Frey: String Quartet No. 4

Supremely serene music, best treated as a kind of guided meditation.

Charles Lloyd – Canto

My entry point into Lloyd's music, which I've loved ever since. Great band: Bobo Stenson, Anders Jormin, Billy Hart. This + Hyperion with Higgins prob my favourites from his ECM period. Mysterious, generous, pure-hearted and exploratory all at the same time.

A few suggestions for a historical guide to drone music.

Tip of the iceberg, of course. What else should @andrewmale.bsky.social include?
Giacinto Scelsi: Quattro pezzi su una nota sola
La Monte Young: Trio for Strings
The Velvet Underground: "Loop"
Tony Conrad with Faust: Outside the Dream Syndicate
Phill Niblock: A Young Person’s Guide to Phill Niblock
Ellen Fullman: The Long String instrument
Ellen Arkbro: For Organ and Brass

McCoy Tyner & Joe Henderson – Forces of Nature: Live at Slugs'
@bluenoterecords.bsky.social

Coming back to this remarkable 1966 recording that surfaced last year. Such a treat to hear four giants of jazz really stretch out in a live setting, at a key moment in the music's history.

The biggest video streaming platform in the world has produced an adaptation of arguably the greatest novel of the last century. And, contrary to my expectations, it's actually very well done.

But why is no one I know talking about @netflix.com's One Hundred Years of Solitude?
