These are two sisters: one decided to make aliyah in the 1920s, while the other remained in Europe. The one who stayed was deported to Latvia in 1942 and murdered upon arrival. The one who left (my great-grandmother) later immigrated to Canada with her daughter and son-in-law (my Bubbie and Zaide).

The beautiful Leopoldstädter Tempel, built in Vienna in 1858, was where my great-grandparents were married on June 21, 1903. Sadly it was destroyed by the Nazis during Kristallnacht.

On September 16, 1880, Emperor Franz Joseph I visited a machine factory and iron foundry owned by my great-great-grandfather's brother, S. Redinger, in Czernowitz (now Chernivtsi, Ukraine). Here's a photo from the occasion. My great-great-grandmother danced with the emperor during the visit.

I recently discovered a financial application that my great-grandfather, David Redinger, filled out in 1939 while he was trying to escape Austria with his wife Josephine. At this point, all of his property had been stolen by the Nazis. A year later he was deported to Lodz and murdered. #HMD2025
