There’s something deeply odd - or at least comment-worthy - about the claim here about not being “clever or well read enough” to read Marx. This would be totally fair enough, but author has two university degrees & won the Orwell Prize

I guess Alexander Armstrong does need some impregnable inner strengths faced with such formidable disadvantages

Latest ONS figures on alcohol-specific deaths are awful - numbers in the North East now way above everywhere else, with a rate now well over double that of London

What a delightful tone to take. Doubtless Gen Z will benefit greatly from heeding this respectful, not-at-all-condescending moral lecture from another one of our sage New Labour-era light-entertainers posing as a public intellectual

Somebody (i.e. David Peace) really needs to write an epic fictional treatment of the 1991 FA Cup Final. Brian Clough, Gary Lineker, Princess Di, the future King Charles and err Stuart Pearce looking on as Gazza’s tragic demise began with one balletic & horrific slide of the legs

I was no levelling up stan but the Grey Labour way seems to be to let the regions with their alternately troublesome & faceless mayors slowly decay while a desperate, idea-free chancellor reverts to the Thatcherite/neoliberal default of boosterism for the South-by-South East

The only problem with this is that Streeting is part of a miserable, declinist government led by a miserable, declinist prime minister

I know this is priceless but there is a serious point buried here that if Starmer had been even a little less berserkly anti-left he would be getting some very useful soft-left love right about now, instead of which he’s rapidly becoming a pariah for just about everyone

“Alex Nove” lol. I feel like if Anthony Barnett (& his proofers/fact checkers) are getting names so spectacularly wrong, this rather calls into question his/their ability to intervene in debates as semantically & linguistically super-fine as the Englishness one

While previous generations fantasised about sex, drugs, rocksteady etc, for millennials seeing a good new train line appear on a map is like arriving in Xanadu
