fuck me, i don't think we'll be able to pry reform's boot out of the bbc's mouth.

lovely bit of road reclamation for pedestrians courtesy of southwark council.

plants coming in nov '25.

this is great because everyone hates this guy and if he's telling us to do one thing, we should definitely just do the opposite.

blair is just the worst kind of cretin. no credibility because of an illegal war and an idiot because he doesn't want to implement policies people actually support.

big this meme vibes.

enjoying our two weeks' off (she actually just went to the vet).

actually working through the paper, i found where my sister lives.

green belt proximity clearly having some impact. there is a railway station nearby but it's had no capacity increases in years and you have to drive to get to it, not ideal!

great work from @neweconomics.bsky.social.

housing is crucial in shaping the behaviours of communities.

new housing estates regularly go unaccompanied by bus routes, train routes, and vital amenities for communities.

projects need to start helping people move away from the car as standard.

the next best thing is that it would barely add anything to the price of an airline ticket.

in fact you'd just have to sacrifice an airport coffee for massive savings in warming.

we should absolutely be looking in how to reduce contrails!
November 14, 2024 at 10:27 AM
the best thing about this, is it's just an incredibly cheap way to make warming savings

it would cost just £17 per tonne of co2 equivalent.
November 14, 2024 at 10:27 AM
and there are literally no downsides in terms of heating.

mere rerouting will cause an a slight increase in co2 emissions.

but the impact of reducing contrails is much more significant.

if we ramp up ambition and texh development, we could make significant gains on reducing warming.
November 14, 2024 at 10:27 AM
just 3% of flights generate 80% of this warming.

that means there aren't actually a huge number of flights where this rerouting would need to be deployed.
November 14, 2024 at 10:27 AM
those big, white lines in the sky you see come from planes.

they're contrails.

and they contribute significantly to global warming.

BUT

there is actually an easy AND cheap fix to them. let's go 🧵

went to a talk with richard powers a couple of days after the election.

his perspectives after writing overstory and his newest novel playground were so refreshing.

it was a reminder to hold on to hope and why tech billionaire libertarians are the worst.

flooding. it's awful. we managed to skirt around the peaks.

waters were still very high in prague and bratislava and budapest was still actively flooded.

these will only get worse as time goes on and emissions go unabated, action is urgently needed. and as i go back to the uk, floods await.
September 28, 2024 at 8:10 AM
some observations from a climate-y perspective.

mainland europe has SO much onshore wind. it's clear that almost a decade on an effective ban on onshore wind in the uk has left us significantly behind (yes we have more capability for offshore but still).

just look at the windfarm by bratislava.

last stop was bled in slovenia for a little bit of nature respite after so many cities!

loved every minute, did some rowing, saw trees and wandered through a gorge.
September 28, 2024 at 7:54 AM
budapest was hectic but we managed to see a lot as well as the hungarian national gallery which was stellar.

enjoyed going to the top of its big dome.
September 24, 2024 at 6:56 PM
bratislava gave us some great sights considering we were only there one night.

went up one of the oldest towers in the city and the cumil statue is one of the best statues we've seen on the trip.
September 24, 2024 at 6:52 PM
prague was sick.

the bio oko is a must and bookshops galore.
September 24, 2024 at 6:44 PM
berlin delivered and more.

highlights included an abandoned airfield park (who even needs a city airport anyway) and an art ecoarchitecture installation with a mycelium honeycomb structure.
September 24, 2024 at 4:10 PM
first two days of a 14-day flight free holiday and gotta say, paris, has delivered 🌞

bring on berlin.

fascinating graph from the economist.

getting a heavier vehicle makes you just a little bit safer while it makes the danger to other cars much higher.

suvs aren't just bad for the planet, pedestrians and people on bikes, they're bad for other drivers!
September 1, 2024 at 6:23 PM
true! some of that can be contributed to improved safety features like crumple zones.

regardless big cars getting bigger will certainly drive a trend of smaller cars, and the "average car" getting bigger.

look at the difference between a fiat 500 and land rover discovery though!
July 26, 2024 at 2:58 PM
actually insane that the three busiest flight routes in europe all involve the uk and specifically, London.

domestic train travel is a disaster in the uk and our investment and involvement with the eurostar has been dismal.

the uk deserves better.
