Abstention at this urgent time of crisis and escalating deaths is not a politically neutral position.
A STATEMENT FROM A COLLECTIVE OF SIDNEY MYER CREATIVE FELLOWS October 30th 2023. ON THE WAR ON GAZA We are musicians, choreographers, artists, writers, and other art makers and administrators. Our ancestors hail from all corners of the globe along with many proud First Nations makers connected to countries on this continent. As a community, we span multiple and intersecting faiths, religions, ethnicities, and identities. We pledge our solidarity with the people of Gaza, currently enduring what nine UN Special Rapporteurs have called ‘crimes against humanity’ inflicted by the government of Israel, and a “risk of genocide against the Palestinian people.” We condemn our government’s complicity in blatant violations of international humanitarian and criminal law. We demand our government support an immediate ceasefire, the opening of Gaza’s borders, the release of all hostages, and the immediate provision of humanitarian aid to the suffering Palestinian people as necessary first steps to a lasting peace. Abstention at this urgent time of crisis and escalating deaths is not a politically neutral position. As storytellers and culture makers, we will not be silent or silenced on the crimes against humanity that the Palestinian people are facing. We encourage others in the creative industries to also speak out, without fear of retribution.
