Plant lady, long-distance hiker, politics nerd. Haligonian transplanted to Ottawa.
The dog has decided to stop me from working or moving, so I guess it's a good time to fire up a 2.5 hour YouTube video on my work computer.

On my Environment Canada weather app today (World Meteorological Day): a pointed article about the importance of weather forecasting at a time when DOGE cuts to NOAA threaten the ability to predict weather not just in the US, but also here in Canada and beyond.

The snow is melting and my plant babies are getting ready for their big debut.

This year I'm growing three kinds of hot peppers, five kinds of heirloom tomatoes, three varieties of heirloom beans, summer & winter savoury because a I'm a Nova Scotia girl, "Rainbow" kale because it's pretty.

Today I frolicked in the snow with a small dog. Five stars, would recommend.

A new and emerging collection, but since moving into a house with space to garden I've gotten really into heritage bean varieties. Last year I grew "Trionfo violetta" and "Scarlet Runner." This year's addition is "Kahnawake Mohawk."

It's fun to watch the descendants of the Puritans, who hanged women as witches if milk went bad, gleefully using a rodent to perform divination

Shit feels heavy right now, so I'm re-reading @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social's gem of a book, Hope in the Dark. Full of reminders that social and political forces can and do change, because we keep working to make them change.

Stay safe out there, friends.

Exactly one year ago I was crossing Waiau Pass, one of the most spectacular & rewarding days of my thru-hike of Te Araroa in Aotearoa New Zealand. Today was one of the most stressful days I've had since I retired from law 7 years ago. Off to gaze at hiking photos & pretend I'm somewhere else.

"Communications professionals like myself" are begging you to stop sending emails like this to small-business owners.

Do not ask Chat-GPT to cram every known buzzword into a 100-word email and then call the result "marketing."

After Black Friday & Cyber Monday comes the palate-cleanser of Giving Tuesday.

If you can, please give to a serving organization.

One of my faves: the Canadian Environmental Network does the unsexy but crucial work of amplifying community-based orgs & pushing for sustainable public policy.

It's been a long day, so please enjoy this fern I saw in Aotearoa last year.

I've been lurking on this app for 6 days and I'm pleased with how much of my feed is made up of cat pictures. Hoping this energy carries on long past National Cat Day. I don't have a cat, so here is one of my plant babies for your enjoyment.
