Archaeologist (Ph.D.), artist, & award-winning author of In the Garden Behind the Moon: A Memoir of Loss, Myth, and Magic. American Book Fest’s Best Book of the Year in Multicultural Nonfiction (2024).
My IPPY Gold Medal arrived & it’s a CHONKY boi! 😅 So glad I pushed through the fear that “there’s no market for memoir.” In the Garden Behind the Moon is for the thinkers AND the seekers, &those who wake up, mid-apocalŷpse, as I did, surprised to find...they might just be both? 👀 🌀 a.co/d/271zPgx

Looking for memoir lovers, magic seekers, and perennial askers of why. Or when appropriate, why not? In the Garden Behind the Moon: A Memoir of Loss, Myth, and Magic has been loved by critics and readers alike. So what about it? The world is hard. So is life. Are you ready to believe in magic again?

In the Garden Behind the Moon is now a multi-award-winning book! 🙂 American Book Fest’s Best Book of the Year (2024) in Multicultural Nonfiction (also a finalist in 3 other categories—parenting & family, self help, & spirituality); & an IPPY Gold Medalist (2025) in Aging/Death & Dying. I’m so happy.

Books that made me want to give up writing b/c why even bother. 😅 No, I’ve never actually considered giving up writing. I was exaggerating for attention. 🙃 These are just books that make it feel more urgent than ever to think, speak, &write more beautifully in the world. Have y read any of these? 😍

It feels a little funny to say “I won!!” about death and dying 😅. But well, death is a part of life, &the one thing we can all be sure we have in common, isn’t it? The real win is knowing people everywhere are speaking the names of beloved old ones, while starting to heal themselves along the way. 😌

Loved this modern, urban, Latino fantasy retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, coming out June 7, by @carablaine.author! Snappy dialogue; gritty, urban crime-thriller vibes; with a wolf-shifter romance and various kinds of magic, overt and latent, made this a page turner for me.

Who here is into immersive reading? Never done it myself but people describing it are making me kind of jelly and like I ought to try it. Well, now is your chance to immersively read In the Garden Behind the Moon because now through June 3, the audiobook is hãlf ôff. Link in bio and enjoy! #booksky

Stories are the bridge. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Stay curious, friends, and you’ll always be all right. That’s what my dad used to say. I think In the Garden Behind the Moon will leave you enlightened, delighted, and…changed? 👀 #aapiheritagemonth #aanhpi

I realized I list myself as an artist in my profile but I’ve never once posted about my art! I do Chinese brush painting but I only came to it after my folks died. Reconnecting with this ancestral cultural activity was a huge part of my healing & many of them now illustrate my book in full color! 🥰

I am obsessed with the movie Sinners, not just for its supreme ART, but b/c I had no idea I would see my own deep southern Chinese & sharecropping ancestors on a screen together! 🤯 I wrote an award-winning book about some of that. Although there are no vampires in this story, there ARE ghosts! Enjoy

Just got this beauty in the mail from @carablaine.author. Token of a Wolf is giving urban fantasy wolf-shifter romance, crime-stopping vibes and though I’ve only just cracked it open, it’s got a great opening and snappy writing that has sucked me right in. Really looking forward to this! 😍

Coming to PBS in July! A documentary on Hidden Boston (pics from our 2 days of filming, at the Mass State Archives—where I am composing myself in the can 😅— and at the Royall House & Slave Quarters, which is the archaeological site I based my book, Slavery in the Age of Reason, on). #authorsky

Exeter LitFest & National Book Award winner, Dr. Tiya Miles, who says she teaches my first book, Slavery in the Age of Reason: Archaeology at a New England Farm, every year! 🤩 I picked up her own most recent Night Flyer, about Harriet Tubman & her special relationship to nature and the environment.
