My obituary for Michael Burawoy has been published by Work in the Global Economy. I tried to provide both some insight into Michael as a person, his work and especially his politics.

I'm preparing a lecture on 'Sociological Theory at Work' and stumbled upon this Michael Burawoy quote from an old lecture slide. Sums up what being a Marxist social scientist means so perfectly.

Wishing we'd been more explicit in explaining how platforms engage in price gouging rather than rent seeking - the source of much confusion in the platform & 'rentier capitalism' literature. Rentiers, unlike platforms, are unproductive - capturing value without producing it.

Finishing my slides for next week's @camsociology.bsky.social Soc9 Global Capitalism lecture on 'Platform Capitalism'. Can't wait to teach this!

A pleasure to discuss our GigRights research on working conditions in the UK gig economy with Safety Management:

"employer-driven... flexibility... really [is] experienced as insecurity... the flexibility from the worker’s perspective is often a bit of a myth”

For this reason I've avoided the rentierism terminology when discussing labour platforms, instead I've argued they engage in price gouging and commodification but still provide valuable services

Finally got around to reading Morozov's @newleftreview.bsky.social 'Critique of Techno-Feudal Reason'. Completely agree with his critique of rentier arguments i.e. platform companies are productive rather than simply rent seeking newleftreview.org/issues/ii133...
