VICTORY!

The @archpbu.bsky.social team have been maintained, with a small reduction in staffing hours.

The petition was a success in helping ensure that the service remains resilient and sustainable, and that the collections are preserved for future generations and made accessible to all.

So great to have been invited to share during a session at #RGSIBG25 about co-creating place-based climate adaptation action.

Business as usual does overwhelm... but it was uplifting to hear about the many methods being tested to challenge the status-quo.

Happy to say that 100 records have been digitised by @archpbu.bsky.social and are now online!

This means you can engage with the historical resource and evidence in your own way.

Our records cover the period when arguments for and against the abolition of the slave trade were raging.

Richard Pennant was part of a influential pro-slavery network and "...an outspoken campaigner in favour of the continued legal status of slavery" - Eleanor Harding

It can be a puzzle trying to find connections between records and to cross reference material.

However, sometimes you come across something very much puzzle like!

These are individual parcels held in Jamaica, possibly part of a larger map.

The digitization of colonial archives has to be situated and understood within their historical, political and affective context.

The "Penrhyn Jamaica Papers" Project will help towards @archpbu.bsky.social's work in understanding, presenting and sharing wider contexts of our important collections.

The Penrhyn Archive is dominated by men - the Lords Penrhyn or their agents.

Elizabeth became a Pennant after her marriage to Edward Pennant.

Documents such as this deed from 1702 reveal women's roles in colonisation and estate expansion.

Interestingly also the patent is granted by Queen Anne.

Humbled that my paper entitled "Reframing Eryri: A multidisciplinary collaborative approach to exploring human/landscape entanglements in North Wales" has been accepted as part of the ISCH 2025 conference proceedings!

Look forward to visiting Lapland ...thankfully in June!

The tactile nature of the records can't be forgotten.

Creative ways were used to show changes in land-ownership or in boundaries re-alignments.

As you can see these two surveys have flaps which can be lifted to reveal the changes.

Something the digitising team may struggle to replicate!

Bangor University Archives and Special Collection are housed in the now listed New Arts Building (1963).

Great to work in a historic building which has elements which are "hammered", "snecked" & "cuboid", "trapezoidal" features. A reflection of the variety in our records!

Today is a big day as the over 200 selections from @archpbu.bsky.social are being collected for digitisation!

Each record was identified, recorded and packaged by the project team showcasing what we hope to be an informative cross-section of what has been deposited in the Archive.

The Pennant family had multiple estates across Jamaica and the UK.

Lord Penrhyn's letters were addressed to or sent from Penrhyn Castle in Gwynedd, Wicken Park in Stratford or Grosvenor Square in London (and Liverpool).

All revealing global links.

Richard Pennant, 1st Baron Penrhyn was intricately involved in the everyday management of his plantations.

Having several agents across several Jamaican estates, BUASC has pages of letters.

This means trying to read and make sense of lots of different types hand-writing!

The Penrhyn Jamaica Papers Project would not have been possible without the past labours of many talented, passionate and amazing people. Including those who collaborated with us in a BU funded workshop in 2023. Such as: @cevans3.bsky.social @mariangwyn.bsky.social @corinnefowler.bsky.social

FisHistory, a @ukri.org funded project @sosbangor.bsky.social and @ystadaucymru.bsky.social.

Tonight's presentation of @alecbmmoore.bsky.social thinking and approach was fascinating.

Makes me look at my kitchen accessories differently!

Metatdata, an excel spreadsheet where myself and colleagues are inputting information regarding each record.

Providing digital copies of records held at Bangor University means creating certain information that describes, informs and enables the use of the material.
