Vous vous souvenez de cette tribune anti-5G du Shift Project ? Elle date de début 2020 avec des prédictions à 5 ans. 5 ans plus tard, on commence à avoir des chiffres pour comparer la prédiction avec la réalité. La suite va vous étonner (ou pas).
Parlons énergie, d’abord : pour un opérateur mobile, 65% de sa consommation énergétique directe vient du fonctionnement des équipements fournissant la couverture radio. Or, il y a aujourd’hui un consensus pour dire qu’un équipement 5G consomme 3 fois plus qu’un équipement 4G, et qu’ajouter des équipements 5G aux sites existants (2G, 3G, 4G) conduira à doubler la consommation du site. Par ailleurs, avec la 5G il faudra 3 fois plus de sites qu’avec la 4G pour assurer la même couverture, conformément aux souhaits du gouvernement. Au final, avec ce déploiement la consommation d’énergie des opérateurs mobiles serait multipliée par 2,5 à 3 dans les 5 ans à venir, ce qui est cohérent avec le constat des opérateurs chinois ayant déployé 80.000 sites 5G depuis un an. Cet impact n’a rien d’anecdotique puisqu’il représenterait environ 10 TWh supplémentaires, soit une augmentation de 2% de la consommation d’électricité du pays
