The impasse is made worse by having a gov that is presumed to be on our side. University towns are an increasingly significant variable in the electoral map, and yet HE students and staff are always being told that a Labour government cannot do anything for them.

It is also increasingly clear that after a decade of HE being used as a convenient punchbag for populism - elitist, wokeist, pro-Europe, immigrant-harbouring, AI-sceptic etc - the government and wider public seems numbed from the consequences of the whole sector going up in flames.
