Quite. But the historian’s mistake would not mean the vice-chancellor of his university resigned. Editorial error =/= systemic problems

The BBC is surely big enough, strong enough, credible enough, respected enough, reflective enough, has wide enough reach and a strong enough history to stand up for itself, while acknowledging room to improve. And never kowtowing or denying facts

We’re going to be navigating a likely polarising environment with information fragmentation…
The chance to maintain common facts and a shared information space - alongside passionate disagreement and political debate - is one of the UK’s potential strengths. The BBC is surely essential for that

I thought News at 10 journalists did their impartial job tonight. Long may that continue, including reporting facts, telling the truth, applying careful journalistic judgement, annoying everyone sometimes, not overreacting to any faction and beholden to no interests

Agree - maybe on the same theme… one of the many reasons I hate the licensed misbehaviour of Halloween is having been egged on 31/10… younger colleagues were horrified by the egging. But seemed quite normal to me growing up a 90s teenager

Yes! Great piece. And as you say it applies to ministers too but in a slightly different way. They have power but can be put on a pedestal internally and managed like a toddler. Paging the OG of Child King Theory @cathhaddon.bsky.social
