I'm sorry to hear that your mother has Alzheimer's. It's actually quite rare for people to be more active or do more sport. In most cases, activity levels drop dramatically when people move into care homes. This can also quickly lead to a decline in independence and a faster death.

On the contrary, by moving patients to a different environment, they have less pain and so the brain learns that it does not have to produce pain all the time.
