In 1988, as a congressional staffer, he traveled to southeast Turkey to interview Kurdish refugees who had fled Saddam’s Anfal campaign. His report was one of the first on the Halabja and other chemical attacks on Kurds in Iraq. He still talks at Halabja commemorations about his experiences
