“We should go see him—“ Avi realises Aquila has left the room. “Babe?” From the hall, “Changing! We should meet him as he knew us.” The new mayor considers the story, slightly sadly. “I’m sorry about your friend—“ But she’s interrupted by Avi, “You wanna come, right?” “...Yeah.” Avi look her over. “Do you have anything more formal you could go put on?” Avi undresses, throwing his brown t-shirt over his desk chair. The Mayor looks down at the purple cardigan and pink shirt she’s wearing, and annoyedly declares “This is my formal! I’m the Mayor, not a— not a jazz musician!” “Well, okay, but if anyone asks, we’ll just say you’re our new intern.” “Honey, don’t pick on the Mayor.”

“His pod had crashed near the underwater community known as the Domes. — Connected domes underwater. “At the peak of a leadership crisis, he was a neutral third party.” — A serious, severe-looking armoured Domeguard. “We were there when they made him their king.” — The robot, crowned, amongst many. “He was exactly what the Domes needed, when they needed it.” — A spark between his robot fingers. “He was kind, and benevolent, and ruled with a gentle fist made of space iron.” — The Domes, at peace. Wrapping up, Avi finishes, “But now he's... slowing down.”

“How did you two even meet this “king of the domes”?” Aquila and Avi tell the story. “A long time ago,” Aquila starts. “Not long after we first met,” Avi continues. “Something fell.” — A streak of fire illuminates the sea. “A robot from space.” — A robot hand coming out of the pod that fell. “A friend.” — The robot hand’s robot face, a roughly onion-shaped faceplate with a single rectangular eye cavity on right side, joins it.

Today's Avi & Aquila. “Aw,” Aquila says, sitting at Avi’s computer, “the King of the Domes.” “You get email from a king?” “His aides, actually.” Mayor Nynke considers this. “So you have a formal diplomatic relationship with a head of state? Without the Mayor’s office knowing?” “A diplomatic— He’s a friend,” says an unimpressed and slightly annoyed Avi. But Mayor Nynke isn’t particularly impressed either, and casts a doubtful look upon him. “Please tell me,” Avi whispers to Aquila, “it’s not to late to take a black pebble instead.”

It’s not a friendly visit. “I don’t want to be difficult, Aquila, but please no more wild poison plants. If you must, at least put a fence around them.” “Or what?” “Or I’ll ask what you need poisons for.” “...I will think about a fence.” Avi interrupts them. “Babe, you’ve got an email.” “You read her email?” “I don’t have email.” “She forgets she has email.” Aquila seriously considers the grave implications of this for a second, then earnestly says, almost more to herself, “I really don’t think I have email.” “Just read the email!!”

"I brought dinner!" "I already ate!" "It's pizza!" "Oop." 19:01. Pizza. 20:30. He still does this every time. Knocking on the Door, Inger Lint opens, and whispers "Who's there?" 21:10. Aquila clicks an electric lighter a bunch of times, failing to light it, then throws it away. Modern technology is so convenient. 22:30. On watch, at the fire. Fire. 23:32. On watch. 0:10. On watch, cold and sad. Avi brings a blanket. Warmer, happy.

Avi yells to Aquila, hunched over drawing. "Right, yes." Should go on rounds anyway. 12:23. Bought a pear. Constantly in awe of year-round fresh fruit. 13:46. Had to psychically decouple the Norns again. Idiots. :) She uses an airhorn to wake up the Triumvirate, who are sleeping on a bench. 14:38. Meditation break. But then, drawing. Got distracted. 15:23. Checking in on the station. "Need anything this week?" "Nah." 16:23. Surveilling Doc Robin's lab. "I know you're up to something."

Today's Avi & Aquila. "It was never gonna be you versus me," Avi says to Aquila, helping her get up. They lock lips as a voice over the arena's speakers interrupts them. "Ahem. The game mode you selected requires a single winner. No winner, no crown." "You love me, right," asks a chipper Avi. "You will take victory from my cold, dead hands," says a chipper Aquila. The battle continues, Avi and Aquila in equal pursuit of each other around the arena. Later, outside, on a bench in front of a hedge, the group reflects on the game. "I hate the annual laser tag game," says a frustrated Inger Lint. "You just hate losing," says Doc Robin. "Couldn't be me," says Avi, wearing a red paper crown, Aquila's arm around his shoulders, "big fan of winning." "So you do this every year?" an excited Annie asks.

Today's Avi & Aquila. "There's no sensor on my back," Avi says, defiantly, the lasergun to the back of his head. "You'll never make the turn fast enough," says Aquila, "But wouldn't you like to try? Or do you see another way out?" Avi sweats profusely as he tries to think of one, but doesn't need to. Aquila gets thrown to the side, dropping her lasergun, as she gets shot in the shoulder pad from the right. "Any regrets?" asks the lasershooter. "Besides agreeing to wear the joint-locking pads?" Aquila says, her right shoulder locked in place by the shot. "You tell me." "What?" Annie, the lasershooter, says, seconds before taking a laser to the chest. "Aw dinger."

Today's Avi & Aquila. A silent corridor. Avi, prepared for anything, walking in. Avi, seeing the worst — gasping. Doc Robin, despair on their face, eyes closed, refusing to look down, touches the chest pad, which glows with the red light of death. "It's okay, you can — tell me..." Avi watches his friend on the ground, glowing red, and declares -- "I'll... I'll avenge you." But then. A lasergun, Aquila's, already pointed squarely at the back of his head. "Will you?"

Today's AVI & AQUILA. Prose version follows. Aquila looks out at a seemingly empty corridor, at the end of which she catches a glint of light — Doc Robin — and a shadow — Annie. She turns around and sneaks away. "...Where did she go?" whispers Doc Robin. "She must've spotted us," whispers Annie. "We need to get out of here, stat." "I thought we were doing us vs her," Avi weighs in. "Yeah, well," says Annie, "I didn't feel like getting picked off one by one." "I'm just saying. People are usually happier at the end if she's, you know. Confident. Instead of scared."
