Never been an obsessive fan of either Francois Truffaut or Alfred Hitchcock, but I'm currently reading the book of interviews Truffaut did with Hitch in the 60s, and it's fascinating.

Huh. Just found that I'd written, "[he was] a suburban punk who thought a piece of cloth on his head made him a bad-ass."

I have no idea what I meant by that piece of cloth. A headband? A yarmulke? Maybe a handkerchief like this guy from MST3K?

Some thoughts on coincidence...

Showed the Siren, age 13, Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video. Her response: “He looks like a guy who works late at the office every day and comes home angry.”

Big thanks to @inkcapbooks.bsky.social for hosting SUMMERWEEN Thursday night, and extra thanks to the Siren for helping me read the opening passage of DANDELION. Lots of laughs and fun for everyone, especially the writers (me, Melissa F. Olson, Tyler Welch, and Christopher Micklos).

For the final day of Arthurian April, I present the ultimate symbol of King Arthur: Excalibur! Modeled on the sword from the film, this was a Christmas present from my wife, another of the totally useless things I've acquired. I mean...it's useless until the Saxons invade. Then I'm golden.

For day 28 of Arthurian April, I present two tarot/oracle goodies from the prolific mind(s) of John and Caitlin Matthews.

Of these two, I especially like the Camelot Oracle. It comes with a map of your spiritual “journey” that explains what each card means at that point.

Hmm. Do you think crimes like the second one are maybe the cause of crimes like the first one? Like perhaps maybe...you can't be successful at that level without being a monster? And someone *has* to slay the monsters, that's what all our stories tell us.

The first mind-boggler: someone made a movie of Robert W. Chambers THE KING IN YELLOW, and it's not half bad. As someone who loves the book, I was astounded that it was...well, half GOOD.

The second mind-boggler: some of the wildest intentional subtitles I've ever encountered.

For day 23 of Arthurian April, here’s KING ARTHUR, THE YOUNG WARLORD. Back in the day, episodes of TV shows (usually American) would be edited together to form “movies” for foreign (usually European) cinema. This is a case in reverse: three episodes of a 1972 series called ARTHUR OF THE BRITONS.

For day 22 of Arthurian April, here's a wonderful present from the great Jesse Hemphill that just arrived. I can't tell you how much it means to finally have a sword in the stone on my writing desk; it's something I've always wanted. What a great way to celebrate Arthurian April. 😊

For Day 14 of Arthurian April, I present this solid chunk of pewter I discovered in a thrift store. It’s heavy enough to be a murder weapon in Clue, and the detail is impressive, despite the cheesy faux stone on the shield.

Stayed up late last night watching THE H-MAN, a Japanese SF movie from 1958. It was dubbed into English, but the dubbers also put on Japanese accents, which played absolute havoc with the AI subtitles (the actual line is, "What’s this all about? I demand to call my attorney.")

Repost with an image of your favourite James Bond (wrong answers only):

As I said earlier in Arthurian April, my novel DARK JENNY is based on folklore involving poison apples and Guinevere accused of murder. Imagine my surprise when I found there's ANOTHER novel using the same concept, with Merlin as the detective. So for Day 11, I present THE EXCALIBUR MURDERS.

For day 10 of Arthurian April, I bring you one of the strangest Arthurian films around: Eric Rohmer’s 1978 film PERCEVAL LE GALLOIS, or “Perceval the Welshman.” If you think you’ve seen it all regarding King Arthur, PERCEVAL will remind you that the legends can encompass some pretty wacky stuff.

(Meant to post this yesterday; my bad.)
So thanks to @natania.bsky.social I learned it was Arthurian April, which is something I can TOTALLY get behind. I thought I'd start by highlighting my favorite Arthurian novel, Mary Stewart's THE WICKED DAY.

So: October 1973. Picture 10-year-old me, with big dorky glasses and a terrible haircut, seated on the floor in front of our enormous 25" TV and ready to watch DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. Am I excited? Hell, yeah. I knew... (1/3)

Researching the Renaissance lets you experience so much beauty.

And then there's this.

Couldn't get back to sleep, so got up at 3:30 AM and began a rewatch--my thousandth, maybe?--of STALKER. Wife found me asleep sitting up on the couch. Your sleeping brain does weird things with a language you don't know: it tries to find the closest English word to Russian sounds. Can go odd places.

Unexpected things I've learned today: in Italy in the 16th century, a dead weasel was universally considered a good omen for an easy childbirth.
