Ah shame. At least it was Reykjavik not a tomato factory

As northern lights sweep overhead tonight, let’s have these lines from James Clark Ross, age 19, who witnessed the aurora whilst overwintering in the Arctic on HMS Hecla in 1820. Written for the expedition’s gazette.

I’m so sorry to hear that. Imagine that this waiter penguin (as seen on an envelope I found on eBay) is serving you fish

I was intrigued by this sign at the cemetery so searched for more details.

Seems a committee of enthusiastic Irish folks cleaned and painted the grave of Limerick soprano Catherine Hayes Bushnell and now there’s been grumblings 😅 Too jolly perhaps?

Robert McCormick. You get a rose even though you shot all those birds on the Ross Expedition

George Back??? Maybe??? Inscription is all but gone. Nearly wrecked Terror back in 1836. Excellent artist. Francis Crozier slagged him off a bit in a letter to Ross.

Sophie Cracroft. Such a simple monument to a special lady.

Okay, let’s have round up of everyone who got a visit this morning.

First up, that old troublemaker John Ross. Listing so badly to port they fitted him with a sensor. How embarrassing! Anyway, he gets a rose.

....except it isn't. It is a copy of this image by Walter William May which was included in Francis McClintock's published account of his search of Sir John Franklin in 1857. A funeral on the ice for the ship's engineer Robert Scott (!)

And indeed the Royal Institution does seem to hold a small watercolour done in Ross' hand. Seemingly the only one we know of.

Yet another little example of how, trained on bad data, AI will tell you with great authority something that is 100% untrue.

Many polar explorers, including ship's captains, were talented artists who documented their dramatic voyages. Was James Clark Ross one of them? Let's ask Google.

Kerry James Marshall at the RA is almost overwhelming. Jaw dropping, epic, all the big adjectives.
