Sad to hear about the passing of Andrew C. Greenberg, one of the co-creators of the RPG series, Wizardry. An incredibly influential series, one of the stories I keep coming back to was a story published in 1982 by Softline on how it was also used as a therapeutic tool.
The cover for 1982's March issue of Softline featuring a cover headline of "Everyone Wins With Wizardry" On this page, Dr. Ron Levy, a child psychiatrist, wrote a letter to Sir-tech relating the story of how he has used Wizardry to help reach out to troubled children. Once they started playing the game, and began creating their own characters, it helped to open a dialogue with them. On this section of the article, Dr. Levy noted the differences of perspective between Ultima and Wizardry and that developing a character in the game was akin to "age brackets" in terms of levels. On this page, Dr. Levy notes that, in addition to a number of other thoughts,"That is the lesson of the game, that if you keep trying and don't overextend your abilities, you will steadily progress toward a goal."
