Scale does not equal structure. It amplifies whatever constraints are present.

With protocols, scale reveals and stabilizes structure.
Without them, scale just accelerates entropy.

Confusing the multiplier for the mechanism is the mistake.

What’s missing in both is the protocol/rules. For example, without an agreed set of rules, the internet would not be possible. Without them, scale amplifies chaos. With them, structure can emerge at scale.

I see. Well the good news is that we do have this seemingly infinite source of energy. There’s plenty of fuel. But where’s the fire? You can’t start a fire without a spark. And those can happen naturally. So in this metaphor, what’s the spark? What’s the catalyst?

I have been thinking about how to trigger bottom up coordination. For addressing societal issues like loneliness, mass coordination would be more impactful than any top down approach. If everyone took small intentional actions to check-in on neighbors for example, it could put a big dent in this.
